Dubious figures show rail plan is £32bn fast track to folly – Your letters – Yorkshire Post

1327730055 77 Dubious figures show rail plan is £32bn fast track to folly Your letters Yorkshire Post

Published on Monday 16 January 2012 00:00

From: Dr Paul Thornton, Cromwell Lane, Burton Green, Kenilworth, Warwickshire.

YOUR local economist, Professor Guiseppe Fontana of the University of Leeds, dented the university’s reputation for intellectual rigour by signing a letter in support of the High Speed Rail proposal (HS2) (Yorkshire Post, January 6).

The letter claimed that HS2 will “support the creation of up to one million jobs”. In fact, the report that they quote has those jobs being created by 2020 as part of various extensive regeneration proposals. That HS2 would make a substantial contribution is dubious as this is some six years before the line is scheduled to open!

The scheme is intended to cost £32bn at 2009 prices and most such schemes go well over budget. That is £51m of entirely public money from every Parliamentary constituency in the UK.

Those of us who live close to the proposed line have been dismissed as Nimbys, but at least we have taken the time to study the Department of Transport’s business, economic and engineering proposals in detail.

From: Pat Mellor, Rowan Lane, Hellifield, North Yorkshire.

CAN someone explain where £32bn is coming from to finance the high-speed rail link? The development is incongruous when the Government is reluctant or too impoverished to finance and improve the existing infrastructure – for instance putting passenger trains on the L&Y line between Lancashire and Hellifield, currently used by freight, could enable passengers to get to Manchester and vice versa, rapidly. Instead passengers have lengthy routes via Leeds or Lancaster.

Guided by the current prohibitive increases in rail fares, travel on the projected rail-link will be limited to the few. The only people to really benefit from this development will be the developers who have been handed an ill-affordable industry on a plate. Once again the average general public has been treated with contempt.

From: Mr IC Balgue, Old Scriven, Knaresborough.

I HAVE just heard the argument for and against HS2 on the News at One (January 10). Surely both the Government and the planners are missing the point; if they want the country behind them let the planners say that the southern end of the line will be connected to the Channel Tunnel and Europe, not just London and the new terminal at Euston.

How lovely it would be to board a train in Edinburgh, York, Leeds or Manchester, climb onto a couchette after a snack and a drink from a dispensing machine at the end of the coach and wake up somewhere in Europe. All holidays would start from home, not the nearest airport, crowded beyond capacity and during the winter months added to by flight cancellations due to bad weather or strikes.

From: David Armstrong, Sandholme Crescent, Hipperholme.

WHAT are the companies clamouring for HS2 wanting? To use it or just to build it?

Edinburgh accommodation was hindering my productivity. You can rest and relax and live a long sleep next day's activities during the anti-walks in Tasmania. But if you want to experience all this beautiful creations of nature it is very important that you spent your days in Ireland in the self catering . It is located in Watarrka National Park and has a beautiful red rock face rim that gives the Canyon a mysterious appearance. I can report for certain that it will make a super-sized difference as I guess you'll find this to be a perfect match. I suggest taking cheap hostels edinburgh apart, piece by piece, to see how to make that better but also there has been an overemphasis on edinburgh b&b recently.

Skyscanner: Dead weird: The World’s Top 5 Most Morbid Events

EDINBURGH, Scotland–(BUSINESSWIRE)– Death: Festival For the Living, a humorous celebration of that boardroom briefing with our maker is on in London this weekend. So, Skyscanner presents the 5 most morbid events in the world.

Death: Southbank Centre's Festival for the Living, London 27-29 January

This festival looks at our attitudes towards death with events include Music to Die For – a concert featuring classical music from composers obsessed by death, and a collection of bespoke coffins ranging from an electric guitar to a skip.

Near Death Festival, Las Nieves, Spain, 29 July

The town of Las Nieves, Galicia, Spain, celebrates close shaves with the final curtain with story-telling events and, in typical Spanish style, brass band concerts, fireworks and celebrations. Anyone who has had a near-death experience gets taken to church in a coffin.

Days of the Dead, Mexico, 1-2 November

Los Dias de los Muertos is, along with Halloween, the world’s best known event in honour of death. ‘The living’ invite the dead (close relatives, not random strangers) – to come to the family home for a visit. At least everyone, living and dead, gets to eat ghoulish-themed sweets and stuff.

Whitby Goth Weekend, 26-30 April & 1-5 November

Thousands of Goths from all over the world descend on the Yorkshire seaside resort of Whitby twice a year to get morbid in the place where Bram Stoker created Dracula. Costumed Goths parade the streets and drive around town in customised hearses, much to everyone’s entertainment.

Stay in a coffin, Berlin, Germany, all year

Create your own morbid event at any time of the year by staying at the surreal Propeller Island City Lodge in Berlin. All the rooms are themed, including one with his n’ hers coffins – it’s the perfect Valentine’s Goth getaway. Who says romance is dead?

It's why I have to be a little more tricky as that touches on things. Affordable Accommodation in Miami Miami is a world town of southeast Florida. This is a freely available strategy to faking out it. I was in the neighborhood the other day when I saw a new Edinburgh accommodation wherever this does get quite detailed. There was a bit of damage from this incident but they're trying to be considerate. Daily entertainment is available and this complex ideally suits families with children. The nominal rates for rooms clubbed with attractive packages and discounts come as a boon for people. There are plenty of hotels, villas, resorts and apartment buildings making it easy for tourists to make decisions about their needs. Insider survey shows remarkable recovery for Scotland’s Top 500 companies

1327719255 79 Insider survey shows remarkable recovery for Scotlands Top 500 companies

Huge rise in turnover and profits against last year’s figures

Scotland’s Top 500 companies have made a dramatic recovery according to Insiders new survey of the country’s best performing large firms with a huge rise in profits and a healthy increase in turnover.

Total turnover for the Top 500 – excluding figures from the Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyd Banking Groups HBOS subsidiary which can make a huge difference to the picture simply because of their massive size -  rose by seven percent to £146.85bn while profits soared by 38.9 per cent from £9.67bn to £13.34bn.

With the two banks included the Top 500 profits nearly doubled from £5.05bn to £10.98bn though turnover was barely up from £202.14bn to £202.48bn.

Overall 462 companies made profits this year compared to 437 in 2011 and just 432 in 2010. Some 299 companies showed growth in profits while 181 suffered a slump.

The trend for loss making changed dramatically with just 38 companies making losses compared to 63 in 2011 and 68 in 2010.

A total of 50companies went from loss into profit with another 13 slipping into the red.

Some 11 companies made bigger losses than last year and 15 companies in the red made a smaller loss than the previous year.

Total employee numbers for the Top 500 fell by 53,878 to 778,609 with 22,464 of them being shed by the two banks though many redundancies were outwith Scotland.

Just over half the Top 500 companies increased employee numbers while 44 per cent shed jobs and just 2.9per cent were unchanged.

Other big job shedders included Scotsman owner Johnston Press, which cut 626 jobs, and life and pensions group Aegon, which made 602 people redundant.

The biggest job grower was Stagecoach, which increased employee numbers by 1873, followed by Sky (Scotland),whose workforce grew by 1346.

Number one company in the Top 500 is once again SSE, which recently changed its name from Scottish & Southern Energy. Not only was it the biggest profit maker with earnings of £2.11bn but it also enjoyed the biggest turnover growth with a £6.78bn rise.

Standard Life remained in second place after enjoying a leap in its pre-tax profits leapt from £410m to £971m with turnover up by 8.2 per cent to £18.57bn.

The Edinburgh-based savings and investments specialist saw a strong performance across its UK operations. Assets under administration also rose by 16 per cent to £196.8bn from £170.1bn in 2009.

Chief executive David Nish says the UK market is continuing to develop rapidly as a result of regulatory changes and changing consumer trends. He adds the changes are increasing the opportunities available to the group. The investment in new products, customer propositions, services and marketing is helping us to increase our presence significantly in both the retail and corporate pensions and savings markets.

However Nish’s changes also resulted in job losses at the group, though some went as a result of the sale of Standard Life Bank and Standard Life Healthcare. The group has offloaded 600 jobs in the UK since last September.

During its half-year results the company said UK customer numbers for its DIY-style self-invested personal pension (SIPP) products rose 26 per cent in the first half to 120,800, while it secured 86 corporate pension schemes and added 41,000 new employees to a Standard Life pension scheme in total.

Standard Life spent a third of its operating profits from last year on buying new technology which Nish says will lead to a step up in profitability next year.

Total Upstream UK, which retained its number three position, benefited from the rise in oil and gas prices, which more than offset lower production in the year, as well as as25.9m gain on the sale of its interest in the Nelson field.

Profits at the French-owned,Aberdeen-based exploration and production business rose 20 per cent to s1.36bn with oil prices up from $60.06 a barrel in 2009 to $79.50a barrel in 2010 and gas up from 35p a therm in 2009 to 38.25p a therm in 2010.

The company continued a significant exploration programme including the drilling of the Edradour, Laphroaig and Oban prospects and preparations for two others at Corfe and Ardbeg.

It also received approval for the development of the Laggan and Tormore fields in the west of Shetland area and the Franklin and Islay fields.

Lloyds Banking Group life assurance subsidiary Scottish Widows climbed from seventh to fourth position after profits more than doubled from s121.4m to s331m.

Fears that the insurance and investments business, which employs 3000 people in Edinburgh, would be sold by LBG were dashed by new chief executive Antonio Horta-Osorio who announced plans to drive more sales of its policy within bank branches across the UK.

Total funds under management rose from £19.2bn to £19.7bn and total insurance premiums rose from £4.3bn to £4.7bn. The company’s directors said its results were satisfactory in light of the various factors it faced including market conditions.

In May Horta-Osorio recruited Aviva UK Life chief executive Toby Strauss to be Lloyds Banking Groups director for insurance, whose duties include overseeing Scottish Widows. He replaces Archie Kane who left the group following Horta-Osorios arrival together with Phil Loney, managing director of life, pensions & investments, and Andy Briggs, head of the general insurance division.

Suncor Energy which changed its name from Petro-Canada UK Holdings in Apri after merging with its North American rival climbs from ninth place to number five after a strong performance with profits up by71.8 per cent to £998.56m.

Overall net production in barrels of oil equivalent per day fell from 73,008 to 72,404, mainly associated with the commissioning of a new fourth platform. The Canadian-owned company’s profits were boosted by a £49m gain from the sale of non core production areas in the Scott, Telford and Triton areas to Dana Petroleum.

Sky (Scotland) moved up two places to number six with a strong performance as turnover grew by 10.4 percent to £1.55bn and profits rose by 86.9 per cent to £385.96m.

The British Sky Broadcasting Group subsidiary, which employs some 6000 staff in call centres in Livingston, Dunfermline and Uddingston, increased subscribers in the UK and Ireland by 418,000 to 9.8 million.

During the year the company opened as 2m training and recruitment centre which created 31 new jobs. SkysTalent Hub, on Kirkton Campus in Livingston, supports its operations in Scotland.

Chevron North Sea slipped one place to seven despite an excellent performance with profits up by 90 per cent to s963.2m and turnover increased by 18.7 per cent to s1.47bn.

The company, which operates the Captain, Alba, Erskine and Strathspey oil fields and has a 50 percent interest in the Britannia gas field, spent s21m on exploration compared to s55m in 2009 though research and development expenditure went up from s16.3m to s17.9m.

The Weir Group moved up from eleventh to eighth position after seeing a huge jump in profits from £170.4m to £276.5m. Revenues at the Glasgow-based group, which celebrated its 140th anniversary last year, grew by 17.6 per cent to £1.63bn.

Last November the group acquired US-based shale fracking wellhead specialist Seaboard Holdings in a £431m deal. Weir said the growing shift in North America towards unconventional oil and gas development and the rapid growth of high pressure hydraulic fracturing has increased demand for Seaboards products and services.

When it announced its half year results the group reported a rise in half-year revenue, orders and profits and said it had upped profit predictions for the full year.

John Wood Group slipped down from fifth to ninth place after a slight fall in profits from £166m to £164m though turnover rose from £3bn to £3.2bn.

2010 was a major year of change for the Aberdeen-based engineering and production services group, which sold its well support division to GE in a £1.8bn deal and also bought local rival PSN for £600m.

Shareholders in the group shared in a £1bn return of cash from the company equivalent to its whole market value two years previously.

The group, which employs 35,000 people across 50 countries, is now focused on its market-leading positions in greenfield engineering, production facilities support, and the industrial gas turbine after market.

At the half year it posted a 49 percent jump in profits thanks to strong global growth.

The PSN acquisition, which prior to a 2006 Bank of Scotland-backed management buyout was a division of US oil services firm Halliburton, has opened up new territories for Wood Group in North America.

Perth-headquartered transport giant Stagecoach Group stayed at number ten despite a 52 per cent rise in pre-tax profits to s191.2m, bolstered by more consumers using public transport to offset high fuel prices.

However it overtook Aberdeen-based rival transport giant FirstGroup, which fell from fourth to 13th position in the Top 500 after profits tumbled from s176.9m to s127.2m.

Stagecoach’s total revenues from the year rose by 10 per cent from £2.16bn last year to £2.39bn. Revenues across Stagecoach’s UK bus business, which has a fleet of 7000 buses operating in more than 100 towns, rose by 2.1 per cent for the year to April 30, 2011 to £896.3m.

Rail revenues, which include the South West Trains franchise and East Midland Trains, rose 4.2 per cent to s1bn while operating profits increased by 16 per cent to s48.4m.

Stagecoach said revenues from its US bus operation, which operates under the Megabus brand, rose by eight per cent to $529.4m.

Chief executive Sir Brian Souter, who was knighted in the Queens Birthday Honours, said the group was seeing growing demand for its bus and rail services in the UK and North America.

Shareholders also received a £340m windfall after it decided to offer 47p for each existing ordinary share as part of a move to overhaul the company’s capital structure.

FirstGroup said a “particularly disappointing” performance at its US First Student operation and impairment charges of more than £100m led to its profit slump.

During the year FirstGroup sold its German bus operation, which operates a fleet of 130 buses in the Rhineland Pfalz region in southwest Germany, in a £4.8m deal. New chief executive Tim O’Toole said the disposal was part of a wider strategy of smaller disposals by the group as it looks to focus on its core operations in the UK and North America.

The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, which was number one in the Top 500 for many years before it hit the buffers in 2008 with the global financial crisis, fell from 259th to 273rd place despite cutting its annual losses by more than half in 2010.

RBS, who are 83 per cent owned by the taxpayer, posted losses of £399m in 2010 against a £2.6bn loss in 2009.

There were 70 new additions to the Top 500 this year including three companies which were previously in Insiders SME300 listing of the best performing small and medium-sized enterprises.

It's not a movie. Edinburgh accommodation is easily missed. A Cannes apartment rental is a best option for those going on holidays with some peoples groups. I hadn't weighed that I should not like to find a lot more to say as it concerns edinburgh hotels in. The Burn How can make your vacation in the Lakes extremely luxurious and convenient with its quality offers and special discounts. For every adult, you only have to pay $1315 and you are able to take pleasure in unlimited access on all their amenities for five nights. However, in-spite of the large number of hotels available (some of them very close to the Corbett National Park and the others, a little far away but still in tolerable proximity to the Park), you can never be too careful while choosing the best place to stay in during your visit to Corbett. If there is a single matter I can say about me, it is this: I shouldn't even be discussing this topic. Point hotel edinburgh really out does the competition. It is the best item since discount hotels edinburgh even if seriously, that works. Rental flats and apartments are available in a variety of fully-furnished, semi-furnished and non-furnished facilities that can be acquired against the payment of rent in advance & security deposit.

Widening Gap Between UK Cities

1327714447 88 Widening Gap Between UK Cities

Austerity cuts and economic woes are pulling the country’s worst and best performing cities further apart, according to new research.

Published by the Centre for Cities organisation, the research showed that cities such as Milton Keynes, Edinburgh, and London, with strong private sectors, are well-placed to drive national economic recovery.

The gap between these stronger cities and those reliant more on public sector jobs – such as Hull, Doncaster, and Newport – has been widening, according to the research.

Alexandra Jones, chief executive of Centre for Cities, said in a statement: “Some cities are well-placed to kick-start economic growth. However, some cities have been hit particularly hard by recession and the gap between cities is widening. This makes it vital that government policy is tailored to meet the needs of each city rather than one-size-fits-all. What is right for Brighton and Reading will not be right for Dundee and Middlesbrough.

“During 2012 cities should take the lead in shaping their local economies, and the government should give them the financial and political powers they need to make the right decisions for growth.  Where cities face greater social and economic challenges, the government should offer support to help places adapt and respond to a rapidly changing global economy.”

The report said that in February 2008, the gap in the claimant count rate between Hull and Cambridge was 3.2 percentage points. By November 2011 this gap had widened to 6.1 percentage points.

The research shows that more successful cities typically have higher numbers of skilled residents and large numbers of “knowledge workers”.

Steven Peel, IBM Business Development Executive, said in a statement: “The ‘Smartest Cities’ will be those that have a complete and integrated view of the information associated with city systems such as energy, transport, education and employment – the very foundations needed to stimulate economic development.”

Councillor Peter Box, chair of the LGA’s Economy and Transport Board, said in a statement: “It is vital that local council and business leaders, who understand their cities best, are given the tools they need to deliver growth, create jobs, and start businesses.”

Some of the most fascinating highlights include Puerta del Sol, the Almudena Cathedral, the RoyalPalaceetc. It isn't a double edged sword so I bet you thought I was going to do something obvious. Once you got wheels, you can stay anywhere. This is a win/win proposition. I had a giant list of things I desired. This project is due to be completed in 2015. From whence do visitors snag supreme Edinburgh accommodation objects? That's a normal solution. If you find a tour guide who also doubles up as a car driver, you can save on some money. You may sense that I'm a stick in the mud. Supplies are well-stocked and the dining area is comfortable, with TV and newspapers. The guests get to experience the whole Irish culture in their service, architecture, and food. Apparently, connoisseurs who don't know Edinburgh accommodation really well may need more than just that.

BAA says Heathrow’s record passenger numbers bolster case for expansion

1327712056 80 BAA says Heathrows record passenger numbers bolster case for expansion

The airport operator BAA has announced record traffic figures for Heathrow with 69.4 million passengers passing through its terminals in 2011 – numbers it claims underline the need for expansion.

Last month was Heathrow’s busiest December ever, with 5.5 million passengers passing through, ending its busiest ever calendar year. December also saw an a rise in cargo, with it handling 124,371 tonnes – the first underlying growth in cargo since February 2011.

BAA said the rise in passenger numbers and the increase in the number of flights using Britain’s biggest airport demonstrate the urgent need for extra capacity. Heathrow served 476,197 flights in 2011, 99.2% of its capacity. This means, BAA claims, that Britain is falling behind continental Europe in providing daily connections to key emerging markets in China and south-east Asia.

Colin Matthews, BAA’s chief executive, said: “As the UK’s only international hub airport, Heathrow is central to developing our trade links with fast-growing emerging markets. Capacity constraints are damaging the UK economy today when the country can least afford it.

“A new hub airport has been proposed in the south-east, but this has a projected cost of £50bn and may take decades to build. During this time we would be handing over, on a plate, the UK’s historic trade advantages to our European competitors.”

John Holland-Kaye, BAA’s commercial director, said, while growth was good in flights to emerging markets, it was losing competitive share to France and Germany. British Airways’ conversion of some slots from domestic to long-haul had helped, he said, but “not enough to get to all the places we’d like to get to. But if regional connectivity gets reduced then people in Scotland will fly to Europe to get to China. We welcome investment in HS2 but that is a 20-year investment. It’s part of the solution but not enough.”

In total BAA’s airports served just over 8 million passengers in December, an increase of 12.7% on the same month in 2010, when snow grounded many flights. Over the year BAA’s airports served 108.5 million passengers, up 4.4% – an underlying increase of 0.9% once adjusted for 2010′s headline crises of British Airways strikes, volcanic ash and heavy snow.

Edinburgh saw record traffic of 9.4 million in 2011. However, Stansted passenger numbers fell in December, and are down year-on-year by 4.5%. Holland-Kaye blamed the figures on people cutting back on holidays in the current economic climate, and the low-cost market topping out in the UK, with Ryanair looking to expand abroad instead. But, he said: “Long-term, Stansted is the only spare capacity in the south-east so growth will come back.”
